Downtown Albuquerque

Downtown Albuquerque is the city center and has been for centuries. Just check out Old Town Albuquerque to be taken back to Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhood. One of the staples of this historic area is the San Felipe de Neri Church, which has been rebuilt several times but dates all the way back to 1706. Downtown is also home to the various ABQ BioParks, including the Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Gardens, and Tingley Beach. Tingley Beach is a beautiful spot in the Bosque where you can get down to the Rio Grande and even go fishing if you want!

The Great Outdoors

Albuquerque has ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, primarily in the Sandia Mountains. Since Albuquerque has a high-desert climate, we get lots of sun and great opportunities for outdoor exploring year-round. Go hiking or camping in the Sandias or even ride the Tramway to the top of the mountain. And for outdoor accessibility in town, we love the Paseo del Bosque Trail. This 16-mile trail is for joggers, bikers, walkers, skaters, and more. You can also rent a paddleboard or kayak and take it out on the peaceful Rio Grande.

Educational Opportunities in Albuquerque

Anyone local to ABQ knows the city is home to the largest university in the state—the University of New Mexico. The school has over 22,000 students as of 2021, and the neighborhoods around the school are lively and iconic, like the Nob Hill neighborhood. If you’re looking for some educational opportunities in Albuquerque that are not of the higher education variety, take a visit to one of our many museums. The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History (with the tongue-in-cheek slogan “Reactions Welcome”) is a great place to learn about the Atomic Age and New Mexico’s role in it.

See New Mexico’s Past

Of course, New Mexico is home to many Native Americans, including the 19 Pueblo tribes. Each pueblo acts as a sovereign nation, and while the communities are their own entities, the influences on food, art, and other forms of culture can be seen all over the city of Albuquerque. If you want to take a dive into the region’s history, you can also check out Petroglyph National Monument to see sacred symbols from the past.
