Barelas is a Southwest Albuquerque neighborhood with many tourist attractions as well as several local hotspots. It is located just south of Downtown/Plaza Vieja and very close to the Rio Grande. Here are some of the region’s noteworthy destinations.

Red Ball Cafe

The Red Ball Cafe is a staple of Barelas. Its claim to fame? The “Original Home Of The Wimpy Burger.” You may be wondering what that even means, it is a small hamburger with their signature sauce called “wimpy sauce”. Their most popular combo includes two Wimpy Burgers and fries. They also have enchiladas, tacos, and green chili.

Wheels Museum

Wheels Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting and preserving transportation history in the heart of Albuquerque’s Rail Yards. On their website, they have extensive exhibits that explore how trains shaped the city, as well as a variety of other modes such as automobiles, horses, and wagons, among many others! It was a long and narrow structure that once housed an inventory of various parts at the Santa Fe Railyards.

Instituto Cervantes

The world-renowned Instituto Cervantes, the largest institution dedicated to teaching the Spanish language, is located in Barelas.
